Diesel & Heavy Equipment Fleet Mechanic

Location: Detroit, MI (supporting client operations in the Dearborn area)

A day (or night) in this role

When your shift begins, you’re the go-to pro keeping trucks, yard machinery, and heavy-duty equipment mission-ready. On the day shift, you move from scheduled PMs to quick-turn fixes. On the night shift, you take ownership of breakdowns and get units ready for morning dispatch. In all weather and at a fast pace, you put safety first while solving problems with engines, powertrains, hydraulics, and electrical systems.

About the work and who we support

Express Employment Professionals partners with clients in the Dearborn area whose operations power industries from automotive to heavy construction—specifically heavy load transfer and processing/recycling equipment. You’ll be part of the maintenance team that keeps these essential fleets moving.

Schedules & compensation

• 1st Shift: Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM – 4:00 PM; Saturday as needed, 7:00 AM – 12:00 PM
• 3rd Shift: Monday–Friday, 8:00 PM – 6:00 AM; additional overtime as needed
• Pay: 1st shift $20.00 – $25.00/hour (based on experience); 3rd shift up to $31.70 (based on experience)
• Employment Type: Full-Time

What you’ll tackle

• Perform preventative maintenance and corrective repairs on engines, transmissions, brakes, suspensions, and hydraulic systems.
• Troubleshoot and repair electrical and air systems on trucks and heavy machinery.
• Service, lubricate, and inspect vehicles and equipment per maintenance schedules.
• Respond to road or yard breakdowns and execute on-site repairs.
• Pick up parts from local dealerships and vendors as needed.
• Conduct test drives to validate repair quality and performance.
• Adhere to safety standards, PPE usage, and proper tool care.
• Document work performed and maintain accurate maintenance records.
• Assist with shop and plant equipment housekeeping/cleaning duties.
• Support other tasks as assigned by supervisors.

What you bring

• High school diploma or GED; age 18+.
• Valid driver’s license; CDL-A preferred.
• 2+ years as a diesel or heavy equipment mechanic preferred.
• Experience with welding, torching, and hydraulic systems is a plus.
• Mechanic license or equivalent experience preferred.
• Diagnostic capability across mechanical and electrical systems.
• Clear communication and collaborative mindset.
• Self-starter; effective working independently or on a team.
• Able to lift up to 50 lbs and work outdoors in varying weather.
